GIGAette is pleased to announce that the CryoIMS IDP-LT Standard has received Safety Integrity Level 2 (SIL 2) certification in accordance with IEC 61508, the international standard for functional safety of electrical, electronic, and programmable electronic safety-related systems.
What is SIL 2?
The Safety Integrity Level (SIL) framework classifies instrumentation by its reliability in preventing hazardous events. SIL 2 requires a probability of dangerous failure on demand between 10⁻³ and 10⁻², meaning the system must function correctly at least 99% of the time when called upon for a safety action.
For cryogenic storage facilities — particularly those handling hydrogen and LNG — level monitoring is often a safety-critical function. Overfilling can cause structural damage, pressure excursions, or catastrophic release. SIL 2 certification means CryoIMS can now be formally integrated into Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS) at these facilities.
Certification Process
The certification was conducted by TÜV Rheinland over a 14-month assessment period that included:
- Hardware reliability analysis — FMEDA (Failure Modes, Effects, and Diagnostic Analysis) of all components in the cryogenic measurement chain
- Software assessment — Verification of embedded firmware against IEC 61508-3 requirements for systematic capability
- Environmental testing — Accelerated life testing under thermal cycling (4K to 300K), vibration, and electromagnetic compatibility conditions
- Proof test interval validation — Confirmation that the required safety performance is maintained with a 5-year proof test interval
Key Results
| Parameter | Value |
|---|---|
| Safe Failure Fraction (SFF) | 92.3% |
| Proof Test Interval | 5 years |
| Hardware Fault Tolerance | 0 (single-channel) |
| Systematic Capability | SC 2 |
| Useful Lifetime | 20 years |

What This Means for Customers
Regulatory Compliance
Facilities subject to SEVESO III (EU), PSM/RMP (US), or K-PSM (Korea) regulations can now use CryoIMS as part of their certified safety instrumented functions without additional custom safety justifications.
Reduced System Complexity
Because CryoIMS integrates level, pressure, and temperature in a single instrument, facilities may be able to reduce the number of independent safety-rated instruments on each tank — potentially simplifying SIS architecture and reducing lifecycle costs.
Extended Proof Test Intervals
The 5-year proof test interval is significantly longer than many competing instruments (typically 1–2 years). This reduces planned shutdowns and maintenance burden, which is particularly valuable for continuously operating LNG terminals.
Scope and Limitations
The SIL 2 certification applies to:
- Product: CryoIMS IDP-LT Standard (hardware revision 3.x, firmware 2.1+)
- Measured variable: Cryogenic liquid level
- Application: Fixed installation in cryogenic storage tanks
- Media: LNG, LN2, LOX, LH2, LHe
The certification does not currently cover:
- IDP-LT Lite (assessment planned for 2027)
- CryoIMS Full system (monitoring-only, not safety-rated)
- Pressure or temperature measurement channels (level only)
Looking Ahead
SIL 2 certification is a milestone, but our roadmap includes further safety development:
- SIL 3 assessment — Feasibility study for redundant (1oo2) CryoIMS configurations targeting SIL 3
- IDP-LT Lite certification — SIL 2 assessment for the compact product line
- Marine DNV type approval — For LNG carrier and hydrogen ship applications
